Winter 2023-24 | Decolonizing Anthropology Lecture Series

Decolonizing Anthropology - Eine selbstkritische Standortbestimmung in Forschung und Lehre // A self-critical appraisal of the current state of research and teaching

A hybrid lecture series and teaching format by and for social and cultural anthropological institutes in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

We cordially invite our students to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in a discussion across-institute, with social and cultural anthropologists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, on the pressing topic of "Decolonising Anthropology“.

Form your own opinions about the stakes and challenges of decolonising anthropology, and get to know students from other contexts.

This lecture series is a collaborative weekly event organised by departments of Social and Cultural Anthropology (Ethnologie) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Each session is curated by a different department / institute and features talks, discussion rounds as well as the screening of the film “Measures of Men” (D 2023, 116’, German with English subtitles).

The lecture series is accompanied by a boasblog, hosting contributions by the presenters: https://boasblogs.org/decolonizinganthropology/

Apart from texts, the blog also features accompanying literature, discussion questions for each topic as well as the recorded talk (where available).

The lecture series is running throughout the winter term (26 Oct 2023 – 1 Feb 2024) on Thursdays, 6:15–7:45pm CET, on Webex. It will continue in the summer term 2024 with more talks and presentations.

Students & Staff of DoSCA, University of Cologne

are taking part in the online lectures together and discussing them afterwards on Thursdays: 6:15 to 7.45 pm in Room S23 (Seminargebäude)

We are very excited about the "Decolonising Anthropology" event series that starts on 26.10.2023. Please find the official invitation in this special issue of the DOSCA Newsletter.

As of today, you can also take the lecture series "Decolonizing Anthropology" in KLIPS - i.e. you can receive a total of 3 CP credit for this important topic in the supplementary modules of your degree programme (BA Ethnology in EM3 | MA SCA in EM4a or EM4b | MA CEA in EM1). As a course credit, participation in a group presentation is expected, through which we will prepare for the respective lectures - strictly in the Cologne circle BEFORE the event.

We meet for the Klips course every Thursday at 17:45 in S23 (Neues Seminargebäude) to prepare the lectures together, also with the help of literature and blog posts.
