Admission requirements

Admission to the Master's programme in Social and Cultural Anthropology is open to students who have obtained a Bachelor's degree (or a comparable degree) in the subjects of Ethnology, Social or Cultural Anthropology, provided these subjects are anchored in ethnological / anthropological (methodological: ethnographic) subject traditions.

Bachelor graduates (as well as graduates with a comparable degree) from affine subjects can also be admitted after a case-by-case assessment. In these cases, at least 40 CP must be available in relevant subject studies.

Affine subjects include European ethnology or cultural studies, which have roots in the tradition of folkloristic and/or literary studies; social science subjects, such as (developmental) sociology, and last but not least, study programmes oriented towards regional and area studies, such as Asian and African studies or Islamic studies.

From winter semester 2022/23 onwards, you can apply for the Master's programme only if you have achieved an overall grade of 2.3 (or the foreign equivalent of the German grading system) in your Bachelor's degree.

Language skills

Starting with the winter semester 2022/23, English language skills at the C1 level will be an admissions requirement for the Master's degree programme. If your Bachelor was taught entirely in English and you have a proof for this, this also is sufficient.

As of the winter semester 2022/23, proof of German language skills (DSH-2 level) is no longer required. Nevertheless, you should have a basic understanding of German that is suitable for everyday use.

Knowledge of another modern foreign language other than English must be acquired during the course of study, if not already available at the beginning of the programme. If this further foreign language is a European foreign language, knowledge at the level of A2 CEF is required. This applies analogously for a non-European language. This knowlede of A2 CEF must be proven at the latest when registering for the Master's thesis.
