How to apply for the M.A. Culture and Environment in Africa?
Who can apply?
Applicants who hold a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in Archaeology, Social Anthropology, African Studies, Geography, Sociology, Development Sociology, Political Sciences, or other relevant disciplines are well suited for the Culture and Environment in Africa M.A. program. During their studies, applicants should have received at least six ECTS credit points with courses on African-themed topics. Applicants must have achieved a minimum 2.5 grade according to the German grading system.
Non-native English speakers must provide proof of proficiency at the C1 level in the Common European Framework system, except for students who graduated in English-speaking universities.

The application procedure differs depending on where applicants have obtained their first academic degree.
- Applicants with a first academic degree course taken at a German University have to apply via KLIPS 2.0.
- All international applicants who completed a first academic degree course outside of Germany have to apply via uni assist.
We are welcoming international applications (i.e. first academic degree course taken outside of Germany) through Uni-Assist, the online application portal for different universities in Germany.
Please note the two-stage application procedure!
1. application for a preliminary review documentation (VPD) at uni-assist
Processing time is approx. 6 - 8 weeks. Please apply for the VPD as early as possible before the application deadline at the UzK. In order to participate in the application procedure for the summer term, the documents for the VDP examination should be submitted to uni-assist four or six weeks before the deadline of the application at the latest, for summer terms till beginning of December, for winter terms till beginning of June.
2. application via the application portal of the UzK Klips 2.0 probably :
- from 1 December for summer terms and 1 June for winter terms.
In your own interest, please apply as soon as possible. An early admission will help you to start your studies in time.

The start of the Culture and Environment in Africa M.A. program is in winter term. The deadline for applications is July 15th. However, for students from non-European countries we suggest earlier application dates as the visa application process can take several months. The online portal Uni-Assist should be open for applications from mid-January onwards.

Uni-Assist provides support, if you need help with the online application procedure.
Currently, tuition fees for the term/semester are 304,25 EUR (Winter 2024/25). The fees can be paid in person at enrolment. Information (in German) is available on the website of the 'Studiensekretariat' (in German).
Unfortunately, the university does not provide financial support.
