Vocational Practice Summer Semester 2023

Seminar: Planning and implementation of international scientific events: ECAS 9 2023, 31 May - 3 June 2023

Science management (Wissenschaftsmanagement) has become an exciting professional field for graduates in recent times. The activities are diverse and wide ranging, focusing on planning, coordination, communication, controlling and structuring of research and teaching. Some of the central tasks are, for example, conference organization and fundraising.

This seminar provides an overview of and practical training in planning, organizing and running scientific congresses. The focus is on the 9th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) which will take place at the University of Cologne from 31 May until 3 June 2023 as a face-to-face event and is dedicated to the theme “African Futures”.

The seminar is designed as a block seminar, consisting of 4 preparatory sessions and one concluding feedback session. The bulk of the necessary coursework, however, consists of a work assignment at the ECAS congress. The seminar will prepare for this work assignment and provide the participants with the necessary conceptual and practical competences. This includes an introduction to the scientific concept ("African Futures") and to the function and importance of scientific congresses in the academic system. Furthermore, the preparation focuses on questions of organizational and financial planning (Timeline, Sponsoring, Cooperation Partners etc.)

A prerequisite for participation in the seminar is thus the willingness to take on practical tasks during the ECAS conference from 31.5.-3.6. 2022. In return, you will get a chance to attend panels on your own study interest and become an active member of the conference team.

ECAS is on a of the largest conference on African studies and takes place in different European cities (2019 Edinburgh, 2017 Basel, 2015 Paris ...) on a biennial basis. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference in Cologne was postponed to 2023.

Besides the scientific conference a large social program is planned with diverse partners in the city of Cologne among them the Office of International Affairs of the Mayor of Cologne, the African Community of Cologne, AfriCologne Theatre Festival, Oluyazo Festival of Modern African Music by the Center of Current Music (ZAM), Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, stimmen afrikas, FilmInitiativ/Afrika-Filmfestival.

The Seminar is open for Bachelor as well as Master students.
